GETTING STARTED
USING AGENTS
TROUBLESHOOTING

GETTING STARTED
---------------

1. Installing Microsoft Agent
*****************************
NOTE: You don't need to read this if you have Windows 2000, mIRC 5.82,
or Internet Explorer 4.0 and up!

Run the following file (included with the All-in-one pack)
and follow the instructions. They can be downloaded from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msagent, the Microsoft Agent Home Page, also.

MSagent.exe (These are the Microsoft Agent Core Components.)

2. Installing Speech Engines
*****************************
If you want your Agent to speak with a synthesized voice, you must download
the Lernout & Haupsie Text-to-Speech engine and MSAgent Speech Engines.
They can be downloaded at http://msdn.microsoft.com/msagent.

3. Setting Up An Agent
*********************
Put a copy of Doompuff.ACS, Cats.ACS, or Vivi.acs in the C:/WINDOWS/MSAGENT/CHARS
directory. If it doesn't exist, create it.

USING AGENTS
-------------
NOTE: A copy of <AgentName>.ACS must be in the C:/WINDOWS/MSAGENT/CHARS
directory for all of the following items.

1. Using Agents In mIRC
************************
In order to use an Agent in mIRC, there are
a few basic commands.

/gload <AgentName> AgentName.acs
LOAD
 - This command will load the Agent. It's good to put in
File|Options|IRC|Perform. It will make the Agent load whenever you
start mIRC.

/gunload <AgentName> <AgentName>.acs
UNLOAD
 - This command will unload the Agent. If you unload the Agent, you
cannot show or hide it.

/gshow <AgentName> <AgentName>.acs
SHOW
 - This command will bring the Agent to the screen one it's loaded.

/ghide <AgentName> <AgentName>.acs
HIDE
 - This command removes the Agent from the screen once it's shown.

Now, you can set the Agent up to "monitor" a channel. It will
speak the text that anyone says in a channel, in a query, and
op notices, if you like. The options are in File|Options|Sounds|Agents.

For more involved commands, a program called ani-mIRC is available at
http://www.npwt.net/~sparkee/ani-mirc.htm. Just put your Doompuff in
the same directory as the other ani-mIRC characters. Or, instead
of ani-mIRC, Agent_mIRC is available at
http://homepages.go.com/~blueniteproductions/msagent.htm.
I recommend it for inexperienced users.
Download the above programs at your own risk, as they are not of my
creation.

2. Using Agents In Microsoft Office 2000
*****************************************
In order to use Agents in Microsoft Office
2000, a copy of <AgentName>.ACS must be in a certain directory.

Windows 9x/2000/Me: C:/WINDOWS/Application Data/Microsoft/Office/ACTORS
Windows NT: C:/WINNT/Application Data/Microsoft/Office/ACTORS

Once you have it in that directory, when in Office, click on 'Help',
then click on 'Show the Office Assistant'. Right-click on the Office
Assistant character and click 'Choose Assistant'. This will launch
the Gallery. Find the Agent you want in the list and click 'OK'.

3. Using Agents In Other Programs
**********************************
Many other Microsoft Agent compatible programs can be found at
The Agentry, located at http://www.agentry.net. The Agentry
has programs that let an Agent play poker, read your e-mail,
and many other things. Take a look - you won't be dissapointed.

TROUBLESHOOTING
---------------

Q. My Agent doesn't work!
A. A copy of <AgentName>.ACS must be in the C:/WINDOWS/MSAGENT/CHARS
directory. If it still doesn't work, install Microsoft Agent (see
"Getting Started") and try again. If you are trying to use an Agent in
Office, make sure you are using Office 2000 and not 97. If you are trying
to use an Agent in mIRC, make sure you are using v8.x and up.

Q. In mIRC, my Agent won't load!
A. Try restarting mIRC or recopying <AgentName>.ACS to
C:/WINDOWS/MSAGENT/CHARS. See above for more help.
